HOUSTON - July 24, 2012 - Community members and business owners who have an old smartphone taking up space in a drawer or on a shelf now have an opportunity to clear that space while benefiting students at the same time. Spring Independent School District is accepting donations of used smartphones for use as Wi-Fi devices for a pilot project this school year at Carl Wunsche Sr. High School, Roberson Middle School and Dueitt Middle School.
The three participating schools will allow students to use their own electronic devices to access the district’s filtered Wi-Fi network for educational purposes while in the classroom. Students who don’t have their own devices will be allowed to check out one of the donated smartphones, which will have been wiped clean of all prior phone information by the Spring ISD Technology Department.
Donations of used smartphones, including any Blackberry, Android or iPhone, and power cords can be made in the reception area of the Gordon M. Anderson Leadership Center, 16717 Ella Blvd.
Area businesses who wish to donate used smartphones may drop them off at the Leadership Center or call Christina Allen-Crowder, Spring ISD community relations director, at 281-891-6012 to arrange for pickup.
