HOUSTON - June 7, 2012 - Daquonn Dennis, Westfield High School senior, is the 2012 recipient of the Captain David Fraser Memorial Scholarship. The Fraser family presented the scholarship at Westfield High School’s Senior Night in the Geiger Performing Arts Center.
Captain Fraser’s father, Richard Fraser, said, “Daquonn has established clear goals for his life. We are impressed by his focus, and we believe that Daquonn will continue his pursuit of excellence throughout his college career and beyond.”
Captain David Fraser graduated with honors from Westfield High School in 2000 and received a scholarship to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Following graduation from West Point in 2004, Captain Fraser was deployed to Iraq, where he served as an infantry platoon leader and an engineering platoon leader.
Captain Fraser was killed in 2006 during a road clearance mission in Iraq. His parents and his brother, Patrick, who also serves as a U.S. Army officer, chose to honor his memory by establishing the Captain David Fraser Memorial Scholarship at Westfield High School.
The family considered academic accomplishments, athletic endeavors, work ethic, leadership, and overall need for this scholarship and had met with several candidates before deciding to award the scholarship to Dennis.
Richard Fraser said, “We feel that Daquonn has excelled academically and has demonstrated leadership and a strong work ethic.” He added, “David would have been proud to have him on his team.”
