The Safety & Risk Management staff responds to each emergency within the District. Using management procedures developed and used by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) the Safety staff establishes command for each incident. They establish communication between emergency services (fire, EMS and police), the school administrators, parents and the District's central administration.

In addition to responding to crisis situations the Safety & Risk Management staff writes the District's crisis response plans. They also work with the individual schools or the campus crisis plans. The District provides these plans to the fire departments, sheriff's department, constable's department, emergency medical services, and other county, city, state and federal agencies.

The Safety & Risk Management staff works throughout the year to anticipate hazards and to reduce the risk of a crisis developing.

The Safety & Risk Management staff works with the schools and the support services departments to ensure that a safe and healthy environment is provided within the schools, on the school buses and on the playgrounds and athletic fields. They work with public health officials and school nurses when a specific health threat is identified.

The Safety & Risk Management Department works to ensure compliance with all environmental rules and regulations. The staff oversees operation of drinking water facilities at the Nagy Pavillion property and at the Spring High agricultural facility. They monitor operations of the Carl Wunsche wastewater treatment facility, of fuel storage and dispensing equipment, and of solid waste generated by the District. Preventing problems with asbestos, lead and other toxic materials and ensuring that these are not used in new construction is another part of the compliance program directed by the Safety & Risk Management staff. The Safety and Risk Management Department oversees the recordkeeping for the federal asbestos abatement documents and ensures elimination and/or control of all asbestos contaning materials that might exist in the district buildings.

In coordination with Special Services and Facilities Planning the Safety & Risk Management department is constantly working to improve access for the disabled. They coordinate both transitional duty (for temporarily disabled staff to return to work) and accommodation for permanently disabled staff.

The Safety & Risk Management department collects data on any loss suffered by the District and works with insurance providers to recover these losses.
