Safety and Security Enhancements

2022 Safety and Security Enhancements

Spring ISD is committed to ensuring the safety and security of its students and staff. The 2022 Bond Program, approved by voters, includes substantial investments in upgrading safety measures across all campuses. Spring Independent School District (Spring ISD) plans to use funds from its 2022 Bond Program to significantly enhance safety and security across all campuses. Key upgrades include the installation of impact-resistant glass in school buildings, improvements to exterior doors, and fencing enhancements to bolster perimeter security. These upgrades will roll out in phases, with some, like the impact-resistant glass, expected to be in place by the middle of the 2024-25 school year.

Additionally, the district will invest in upgraded camera systems, a new remote lockdown system, and door repairs or replacements, all aimed at improving real-time monitoring and response during emergencies. Some of these more extensive projects are projected to be fully completed by the 2025-26 school year. Here's an overview of how these funds are being used to enhance security and safeguard the learning environment:

Key Safety and Security Upgrades

These efforts are part of a broader $850 million bond initiative that also focuses on other infrastructure improvements, such as technology updates and transportation upgrades for students.

2016 and prior Safety and Security Enhancements

Spring ISD used funds from its 2016 Bond Program to significantly upgrade the Safety and Security Systems across its campuses. Key upgrades funded by this bond program include:

  1. Upgraded Surveillance Systems: Installation and enhancement of high-resolution surveillance cameras throughout campuses to monitor hallways, entrances, and other critical areas.

  2. Improved Controlled Access: Implementation of access control systems at school entrances, including electronic locks and badge systems, to better manage and monitor who enters the buildings.

  3. Perimeter Security Enhancements: Began work in the most vulnerable locations to install improvements in fencing, gate systems, and other physical barriers to secure the perimeters of schools.

  4. Security Vestibules: Creation or renovation of secure vestibules at school entrances, where visitors must check in before gaining access to the main building.

  5. Access Control and Visitor Management Systems: Deployment of sophisticated visitor management systems, which require visitors to provide identification and go through screening processes before entering school buildings.

  6. New School Buses: In 2017, the district used bond funds to purchase 60 additional buses, allowing it to offer transportation services to 5,000 more students who live between one mile and 1.5 miles from their zoned campus of attendance. All of the new buses are equipped with three-point harnesses to increase student safety. In 2018, the district replaced another 20 aging and mechanically inefficient buses to further improve safety and efficiency.

These improvements were part of a broader effort to create a safer environment for students and staff across Spring ISD campuses.
